Textures
Lately I've found I've been craving all the foods I thought were so bizarre when I first got here. The textures are so different. Grainy, sort of dry, and then oddly sweet. One interesting discovery we made a while back were "mao chi." They are small, round cakes that are squidgy and have red bean paste, taro paste, or peanut paste inside. When we first had them, the quickly gained the moniker "scrotum cakes" because of the texture and shape. Now, suddenly we've all grown to enjoy them. Weirdness.
Also, McDonalds has a new burger just for Asia: the rice burger. Instead of bread, they use two rice patties that appear to be fried. It looks interesting. Certainly, the man in the ad thinks it is outstanding...

(eric) mmmm, I want falafel.
Why did you have to remind me about falafel...I sure do miss that around here. :)
I'm on a falafel hiatus becuase of Bill O'Reilly. Damn him.
Wow, I hadn't heard about that, but it instanly cures my desire to eat falafel! Thanks, Meredith!
You remind me why I admire you for uprooting and going somewhere completely different. I like trying new foods, but as a vegetarian, my diet is limited in terms of trying things. But, I like trying things in my comfort zone. For example, I was brave and tried an "authentic" Japanese restaurant in Dec. with my classmates. I had a few good things (all new to me) but I could leave and go home to my comfort zone. I guess that's the good thing about Toronto - you can eat different "ethnic" meals each night of the week if you wanted, but you ultimately get to go home to your own cooking/groceries.
Kudos to you for braving new food! and finding something you like!!!

I have no idea what meredith is talking about, nor do I have falafel. Or Booger O'Reilly. Or a beer.
In rice burger news, I have it from a good source that the grilled chicken rice burger is indeed a winner! She was wary of the "beef" burger that looks more like beef strips sauteed with onions in what is almost certainly a sweet sauce, but she randomly stopped at McDo's and is now a fan of their new concoction.
Mr. O'Reilly allegedly disclosed his desire to use falafel in a kinky sex scene with a woman during phone sex. This same woman is now suing him for sexual harrassment. Ew...shudder.
